Case study: Savino Del Bene
Savino Del Bene South Africa, formerly "Strategic Logistical Alliance", has been our client since 2005 and is a highly respected and influential player in the international logistics market, focusing on innovation and integrated logistical services. Its global network consists of more than 170 offices.
The challenge
In line with the global trend to automate and transform all business practices to e-practices, SDB SA approached DC Interactive with a request to develop a system that would provide a centralised knowledge repository for the storing, retrieval and internal sharing of business information, and to create an integrated communication vehicle that would relieve employees of repetitive tasks through automation, thereby saving the Company money.
The solution
DC Interactive rose to the challenge by designing and developing Connect, an intranet that runs on a dedicated server behind the SDB SA firewalls. The intranet allows employees to publish business-related knowledge and processes, to disseminate it among colleagues and to discuss it online. Information that is shared is made instantly accessible on employees’ personalised homepages. The quick-search employee directory also features employees’ profiles and contact details.
The questionnaire tool allows managers to review employees, based on key performance indicators (“KPIs”, for short). Results are automatically compiled and reports on individuals, departments and the Company as a whole are generated, thereby assisting management at making speedier and better-informed business decisions.
Results
Return-on-investment estimates for the Human Capital Department indicated an annual saving of R160 000. The intranet is utilised by 400 users and more than 1 000 business-related articles have been published and shared through the system.
In 2008, the SDB SA intranet featured in the international intranet portals usability study undertaken by the Nielsen Norman Group, alongside those of companies such as Air-France KLM, Boeing, Dell, IBM, Fujitsu-Siemens, City of New York, KPMG and Verizon. DC Interactive became the first South African-based software-solutions company to take part in this study.
